Bueno, pues estamos aquí para hablar de este «The Greatest 30 Years On Earth»…

(le enseño su álbum en solitario, “For my Pain” o ”Darkwoods My Betrothed”).

Me encanta hacer música, me encanta componerla, me encanta tocarla.

Never has an interview been so timely and untimely at the same time. Timely because of the moment it took place and how revealing it proved to be in terms of what was left unsaid. And untimely because, just a few days after it took place, something was announced that was predictable in light of recent events. Floor Jansen is no longer the lead singer of Nightwish. The band announced this on their social media, thus bringing this chapter in the band’s history to a close.

The interview was intended to promote the release of Nightwish’s compilation and live album “The Greatest 30 Years On Earth”, due out on 11 December 2026 via Nuclear Blast to mark the band’s 30th anniversary. This provided an opportunity to delve into the band’s history and look ahead to the future.

Hello Tuomas, it’s good to chat again, as the last time we met was in person for just 10 minutes, which the label manager in Barcelona granted me because you were about to miss a train. Here we are to talk about this “The Greatest 30 Years On Earth”… I guess it’s more a label release than a desired compilation by the band.

Well, it was the labels idea to somehow celebrate the anniversary and since we were not doing any shows we had no plans for a new album. We just started to think what can we put together to celebrate this anniversary and then we just thought that… okay Kitee show was filmed, Nightwish comes from Kitee makes sense. Then we have the Amsterdam show and Floor comes from the Netherlands… makes sense.

Then how about creating a brand new documentary and also put out the virtual show we did during Covid so we thought yeah this is a lovely package and then into the booklet let’s add a bunch of never-before-seen photos from the past 30 years plus an exclusive interview with Emppu and me the remaining original members of the band and I don’t think Emppu has given an interview in 27 years so this is something very special for the fans as well.

I think some people will consider a kind of a live album compilation, others just a compilation but on the album there are many tracks recorded live at various shows as you said, some of them were recorded in your hometown Kitee I know it’s a special recording and concert even though Nightwish have played a multitude of major venues festivals and countries could you explain to the Spanish fans why that show is so special.

Hometown, the birthplace of the band and the fact that when I was there on stage it was the baseball stadium of our hometown from the stage you can almost see a building where we recorded the very first Nightwish demo in 1996 so throughout the whole show throughout those two hours I was just thinking it’s been 27 years and what has happened in between that time that Tarja, Emppu and me were in that studio in that building that I can see and then we are here playing for 10,000 people in my hometown.

In between 10 albums, thousands of shows, countless adventures, ups and downs, bliss, terrible happenings everything and it just put a big smile on my face I felt like I’ve really lived. There’s been some really good stuff and I’ve been able to experience all this with my best mates here on stage and there’s still a future to be experienced so that moment on stage during that Kitee show just filled me with lust for life and happiness and the sense of ultimate privilege.

I’ve had access to the album and some live videos have been released, but is there a full video recording of both concerts?

It’s filmed as well as with the audio. It’s gonna be on this release. Amsterdam show as well, it’s filmed and edited.

I’m always curious about the projects or bands you are involved in whether it feeds a solo project or bands for example… (I show him their solo album, For my Pain or Darkwoods My Betrothed). What does a band or a project need to have you to be interested in getting involved? Perhaps it’s just down to the friendship with the members?

Well that’s the most important thing I need to be friends with the people involved and the other fact is the music itself. It needs to be good and inspiring and something that I feel like I want to put effort in. So that’s pretty much it and Darkwoods it’s just a we formed the band in 1994 I was in high school back then I love the music, I love the guys. We have been friends since early 90s. It’s always fun to get together and do some black metal.

Solo stuff is really fun to do as well like that Scrooge album, I mean I’ve always said that I can fulfill almost all of my musical ambitions with Nightwish but I can’t make an album about the duck with Nightwish so I had to go solo that time so yeah that’s how it goes. All the side projects that we have not only me but the other members of the band. They just work as refreshers so that you can concentrate on something completely different and then when Nightwish starts doing new music all the focus is there.

Recently you announced that you will release a second solo album, anything related with Scrooge or another Disney character or, I don’t know…

Musically it’s pretty much the same as that album; it’s basically feel music with some vocals. Maybe a bit more uptempo and the Scrooge album but thematically it’s something very different and we’ll come back to that later this year or early next year.

Recently you gave to our colleagues of Metal Hammer UK an interview that has been widely discussed and shared. I think there are some points that deserve further explanation. For example, and this isn’t new, I seem to recall you even mentioning, even to me I remember you mentioned to me in Barcelona, you always said that you hardly ever listen to music. Back in the day you discovered Metallica, classic composers or film soundtracks. I’m sure that’s what led you to pursue a career in music I guess. There is so much great music and so many brilliant bands out there right now, as a lover of this art form do you ever feel that you might be missing out on something?

Probably yeah I am… I don’t really have an answer to that when I was a teenager all the way up to my 40s I would be listening to music constantly and it felt like I found a new band that I fell in love with once a month and it was lovely you were a sponge to music back in the days but then about 10 years ago or so something happened that I just didn’t find listening to music so comforting anymore. I found silence and ambience much more rewarding and it’s been like that for 10 years.

Whenever a favorite band of mine comes up with a new album I do give it a listen but actively I haven’t listened to music for 10 years. I’m missing a lot I know but it’s just something that…

It’s an option but for people like you that I know you love music, and you work in music and you’re a composer…

I love doing music, I love writing music, I love playing music. It’s just the listening part that’s a bit challenging these days.

In the interview and at the interview that we mentioned from our colleagues you mentioned Annette joining the band and how she fit fitted in with the songs from Dark Passion Play I agree with all that you explained there but didn’t you think about how she’d fit in with the older tracks it was obvious she was struggling. I remember seeing you at Wacken 2008 and it was a little bit… how can I say it was painful to watch her trying to hit notes that were beyond her reach. She has a beautiful voice that fits perfectly on Dark Passion Play, in my opinion, is an excellent album but in a different mode because honestly I was suffering for her that day…

You were, what do you want me to comment… (he laughs) It was a wonderful era of five and a half years. We made two great albums and that’s it onwards.

A point that especially takes my attention, you said that any member including yourself could leave the band and the rest could follow. I’m not completely sure of it, the band is your baby in some way. You compose all the songs, it’s hard to believe that Nightwish could follow without you…

There’s just an idea that if something were to happen to me in a week, I sincerely wish that Nightwish would continue somehow. They would find a new songwriter and keep the legacy and the spirit alive, I really honestly hope so. That’s all I said.

A few days previously to your interview appeared on German’s Sonic Seducer another one with Floor where it explains that there’s nothing planned: «that is the thing with Nightwish we are on temporary hold but there’s no communication about when some things it’s going to happen» That’s the words that Floor said and days later your interview saying that you have six songs finished and bookes studio for next year. Probably she didn’t know anything at that point? Have you had the chance to talk with her recently about all these plans?

The way I would address this matter is that Nightwish has been on a hiatus for more than two years now and there’s many reasons for that more than one. Band members have had a time to think things over, what they want with their lives, with their future, with everything and there is a reason for that, deeply personal reasons. And now Nightwish is activating again, next year and that’s all I can comment at the moment.

Let me ask about Once upon a Nightwish, the official biography of the band. I read it and there’s tons of things that can be discussed but I just would like to know about the chance of a second volume. A lot of things have happened since then. Do you think at some point a release of that? A second part of your official biography?

Would that be something that’s interesting to you, what do you think?

It’s interesting for me as a fan of the band and because I read the first one.

Ok, well… we haven’t had any discussion about it. Nobody’s brought that up… but I wouldn’t say no to that at some point. I’m just not a big fan of these sensationalist biographies that reveal things that have not seen daylight before and all that crap but if it could be done in a good taste why not I don’t know. I don’t rule out the idea but we have never given it any thought.

You said sensationalist but it’s an official release. I don’t remember the name of the guy who wrote it but I guess it was more that guy’s thing than anything that the band wanted to do…

It was more his idea. I have to give it some thought if there was a way to do that but… looking back at the history of the band one of the things that I would maybe do differently is not to reveal so much. I mean there are a couple of dvds or clips that we released like 20 or 25 years ago, I can’t watch at all these days. What were we thinking releasing crap like this but I think back in the days we had watched too many Pantera live videos and wanted to do something similar and it’s like we thought it was cool but it was kind of there but hey, you know, you always do what feels like the right thing to do. It’s in your life and in the end that’s what life is doing better next time. I mean you make mistakes, you learn from it and you go on, no regrets.

A few months ago I had a conversation with Tarja and she said to me literally: “ I was not really involved in that biography, they only gave me one interview on the phone for 20 minutes” Nobody is satisfied with that book… (He just laughs with no answer)

Speaking of tours you’ve made it clear that there won’t be any concerts until the band releases another album that would take us to 2028 which would mark the 15th anniversary of one of your most acclaimed and revered performances back in 2013 in Wacken released as a live album and dvd. The video of “Ghost Love Score” on your youtube channel reached almost seven million views. I always thought that it would have been brilliant to celebrate the 10th anniversary of that concert at the same place in 2023. Obviously that won’t happen but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to do it on the 15th anniversary…

We just haven’t discussed doing live shows at all yet. I mean there are so many ways of coming back if we’re coming back you don’t know, like I said once more, the band has been on a break for more than two years because many of the band members are having are having to go through some issues and they are deeply personal and we will come out with news about a new tour and a new album and the schedules once it’s time for that.

I’m asking about the past because this album is about the past…

Fair enough, I understand.

The next step is the recording of a new album. I think you mentioned six songs finished since the release of that interview from our colleagues of Metal Hammer UK. More songs since then?

I think there’s ten now. It’s been very fruitful when it comes to composing lately.  It’s been a bit of a songwriting frenzy lately and that’s what I’ve been doing together with the solo album and it’s looking good but we have not made any exact plans when to do the only thing we know that we’re gonna enter the studio at some point next year.

Ok Tuomas, thanks for your time and keep waiting for news about this come back.

Good talking to you. Bye bye
