John (Dirty Honey): «Tocar en Europa es un sueño cumplido y nos sentimos honrados por la acogida del público»

Hola John, buenas tardes desde Metal Hammer Spain, ¿cómo estás? Estoy emocionado por poder charlar contigo, porque llevo siguiendo a Dirty Honey desde 2021. Incluso ya os hice una reseña entonces…

Dirty Honey (John): ¡Oh, muchísimas gracias! Es genial. Estoy muy bien ahora, gracias, de hecho estoy de vacaciones. ¿cómo estás tú?

¡Muy bien también, gracias! ¿Cómo está la banda hoy en día, tras tantas giras intensas los últimos años?

Pues es un momento muy interesante. Acabamos de colocar una canción en la Banda Sonora Original de “Minecraft”, aparece en los créditos iniciales y está teniendo unos números de récord, así que estamos súper contentos. Además, hemos hecho también nuestra primera aparición en directo en el programa de TV “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, que fue una pasada. ¡Así que es un momento genial para la banda!

“When I’m gone” fue vuestro primer single en 2019 y un gran éxito entonces, sobre todo viniendo de una banda que no tenía ni contrato con un sello discográfico en el momento. Y ahora en 2025 una película taquillera como “Minecraft” la usa en su BSO.

Si tío, es alucinante lo que la canción ha llegado a conseguir, nunca podríamos haberlo imaginado. La película es muy famosa en todos los sitios y estamos recibiendo muchísimos comentarios positivos de todas partes del mundo. ¡Así que pensamos que ha tenido un gran impacto!

Tras muchos años de giras habéis decidido lanzar un disco en directo llamado Mayhem and Revelry Live en febrero este año. ¿Cómo así lanzar un disco en directo tras solo 2 discos y 1 EP de estudio?

La respuesta es sencilla, pensamos que teníamos suficiente material y era el momento adecuado de lanzar algo que representara bien de lo que la gente que nos ha visto habla, que somos una mejor banda en directo que en estudio. El motivo para venir a vernos no es solo para escuchar unas grandes canciones, pero para ver una actuación tremenda, llena de mucha energía. Así que no pensamos en una mejor manera de mostrarlo que a través de un disco en directo.

Si vas a nuestro canal de YouTube, de Dirty Honey, verás una serie de 4 documentales llamados “Mayhem and Revelry”. Es sobre nosotros en la carretera, viviendo en la carretera. Son 4 vídeos de 10 minutos cada uno y creemos que son muy entretenidos.

Pude veros en directo el año pasado en España en un sitio muy guay en Bilbao que se llama Teatro Antzokia. A pesar de que llevabais muchísimos conciertos en Europa, el bolo estuvo genial y lleno de energía.

¡Sí, recuerdo aquel concierto y aquel sitio tan chulo, estuvo tremendo! Tengo que reconocer que también recuerdo un restaurante genial de carne cerca del Teatro, dónde me gustaría volver, (risas)…

Nos encanta tocar en España. Una vez tuve un momento especial dando una vuelta por el barrio gótico de Barcelona cuando tocamos allí en nuestra última visita y un fan de la banda me regaló una camiseta del equipo de fútbol del Barcelona, ¡que estaba chulísima! Fue un momento muy chulo.

Habéis girado por España en 2024 y 2023. Y ahora en 2025 tenemos la suerte de poder volver a veros en Pamplona con los poderosos Scorpions y también en Barcelona. ¿Qué esperáis de estos conciertos?

¡Sí, hemos estado varias veces ya! Siempre nos encanta venir a España y estaremos abriendo para Scorpions, siempre mola abrir para una gran leyenda. Nuestro estilo es diferente del de una banda como Scorpions, más centrada en el Heavy Metal. Así que esperamos que mucha gente nos descubra y le guste nuestra música y nuestro show. ¡Tenemos muchas ganas, van a ser unos conciertos brutales!

¿Cuáles son las principales diferencias entre girar por USA o por Europa? ¿Cómo es un día vuestro de gira? ¿Vais solo de un sitio a otro, o hacéis algo de turismo, u os gusta escribir música?

La emoción de ver todas esas nuevas ciudades y diferentes culturas es mucho mayor cuando estás en Europa, claro. En América somos capaces de atraer audiencias mayores, por otro lado. Nuestro objetivo es tener un público leal y emocionado en ambas partes y no podría decir que nos guste más un sitio que otro. Estar en tu país siempre mola, pero cuando viajas y la gente te recibe tan bien, en países en los que ni hablan tu idioma muy bien, te hace sentir muy humilde y honrado.

Marc siempre ha querido viajar y tocar en Europa, y ser exitosos allí. Tocando en una banda de rock n’ roll, sabes que siempre habrá gente por el mundo que quiera escuchar tu música, y estamos muy contentos y emocionados de que con el trabajo que estamos haciendo, hayamos sido capaces de crear una buena base de fans allí.

Cuando estamos de gira, también tenemos tiempo para escribir música nueva, sí. Nos gusta hacer un poco de todo, turismo, pero no podemos dejar de pensar en la música.

Entonces, ¿estáis ahora escribiendo nueva música?, ¿hay alguna oportunidad de tener un nuevo disco de estudio pronto?

No esperamos sacar un nuevo disco pronto. Siempre estamos escribiendo música, pero este ciclo para un nuevo disco va a llevar un poco más de tiempo, y no porque no tengamos material, pero porque queremos estar seguros de tomar las decisiones adecuadas en este momento de nuestra carrera.

Habéis tenido el honor de abrir para bandas muy grandes como Guns N’ Roses, The Who o The Black Crowes. ¿Hay alguna banda para la que os fliparía abrir?

Sin ninguna duda: ¡AC/DC! No van a vivir para siempre, así que tenemos que organizarlo rápido, (risas)… Sería un sueño hecho realidad. Abrir para los Foo Fighters molaría mucho también… En todo caso estamos muy centrados ahora en hacer nuestros propios shows como cabezas de cartel. Hicimos también una gira muy chula con Greta van Fleet, pero como digo estamos centrados en hacer ahora nuestros conciertos.

Hablando de Greta van Fleet, ¿estamos los fans del rock demasiado influenciados por la nostalgia? Cuando veo el éxito que ha tenido en España Greta van Fleet comparado con una banda como Dirty Honey, me sorprendo mucho. Y no me malinterpretes eh, que me encantan Greta van Fleet.

Quizás tengas razón y debemos intentar sonar más parecidos a alguna banda, (risas)… es una broma. Siempre he pensado que el camino que hemos elegido, con nuestro sonido original, nuestras canciones, es la forma adecuada.

Los chicos de Greta, cuando se hicieron famosos, eran unos jovenzuelos en el Instituto y sabían bien lo que querían hacer y cómo hacerlo. Su reto ha sido saber encontrarse a si mismos como banda, no solo como alguien que sonaba como Led Zeppelin, si no alguien original y creo que lo han conseguido. Para nosotros, nuestro reto es conseguir el reconocimiento del gran público, ¿sabes? Cada banda tenemos nuestros retos y espero que haya sitio para todos.

Quizás sea más fácil empezar cuando tu sonido es más familiar al público, pero eso no te asegura nada y no les quito ni un ápice de mérito. Greta van Fleet sonaba mucho como Led Zeppelin en sus inicios, pero no había existido nadie hasta ahora que lo hubiera hecho tan bien. Ellos se concentraron más en la versión más acústica de Robert Plant y Jimmy Page, cuando muchas otras bandas se habían enfocado en los sonidos más heavys. Y el público pudo ver lo buenos que eran para lo jóvenes que eran entonces. Estoy seguro de que nosotros tendremos también nuestro momento si nos mantenemos firmes en nuestras ideas y somos fieles a nuestro sonido.

¡Yo también lo creo! Vuestros dos discos me encantan y son realmente increíbles y este nuevo disco en directo captura extremadamente bien lo buenos que sois en directo, y la energía y emoción tan grande que ponéis.

¡Hey! Mencionas nuestros dos discos de larga duración, pero ¿qué me dices de nuestro EP inicial? Que contenía temas como “When I’m gone”, “Heartbreaker”, “Rolling 7s”…

Pero sí, gracias. Esa era la idea con Mayhem and Revelry Live, capturar en un disco lo que todo el mundo ve en directo y luego habla de ello. Y creo de corazón que lo hemos conseguido y estamos muy contentos.

Si que lo habéis conseguido, enhorabuena. ¿Queréis mandar un último mensaje a vuestros fans y a los lectores de Metal Hammer Spain?

We had the opportunity to speak to John Notto, guitarist from LA band Dirty Honey, about their love for playing live, their recent activity and yes, even about the Spanish soccer Team they follow thanks to a fan.

Hello John, good afternoon from Metal Hammer Spain, how are you doing? I’m very happy to speak to you, I have been following Dirty Honey since 2021 and I even did a review of your first album back then.

Dirty Honey (John): Oh! Thank you very much, that’s awesome! I’m doing really good, I’m on vacation right now! How about you?

Doing great too. How is the band doing these days, after some heavy touring in the last years?

It’s a very exciting time! We just have a song on the Original Soundtrack of “Minecraft” movie, it’s appearing on the opening credits and it’s having record numbers, so we are very happy. We have also done our first ever late-night TV performance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, which was also great. So it’s a great time for the band!

“When I’m gone” was your first single in 2019 and it was a great success, more even coming from a band who did not have a Contract with a Record Label at the time. And now a mainstream movie like “Minecraft” uses this song in their OST.

It’s amazing what the song has produced, we could have never imagined. The film is very popular everywhere, so we are getting many positive comments from all around the world. So we believe it’s been a big hit!

After several years of touring you have decided to release a live album called “Mayhem and Revelry Live” in February this year. Why did you decide to release a live album after only 2 studio ones?

The answer is simple, we thought we had enough material and it was time to put something up that represented what many people talk about, that we are even a better band live than in studio. The reason to come and see us is not only to hear great songs, but to see a great performance, full of high energy. So, what better way to show this than in a live record?

If you go on to the Dirty Honey YouTube channel, there is a documentary series called “Mayhem and Revelry” with 4 Parts. It’s about us being on the road, living on the road. They are 4 videos of 10 minutes each, they are funny.

I was able to see you on the road last year in Spain, in a very nice place in Bilbao called Teatro Antzokia. Despite having already had a very long run in Europe, the concert was great and full of energy.

Yeah! I remember that concert and I remember the place, it was great. I have to say I also remember a great meat restaurant close to the venue, to where I would love to go again!

We love to play in Spain. I had a very nice time walking the old district in Barcelona when we played there and in our last visit, one fan gave me a t-shirt from Barcelona soccer Team, which was very nice!

You have toured Spain both in 2024 and 2023. And now in 2025 we will be lucky to see you in Pamplona with mighty Scorpions and also in Barcelona. What are you expecting from these shows?

Yeah! We’ve been several times so far, yes. We are always happy to go to Spain. Yes, we are opening for Scorpions, it’s always great to open for legends. Our style is different from a band like Scorpions, more focused on Heavy Metal. So we hope that many people will discover us and will like our music and our show. So we are looking forward to these shows! They are going to be killer!

What are the main differences of touring USA or Europe? How is a normal day of touring? Just moving from one venue to another, or do you sometimes write music or do some tourism?

The excitement of seeing all these new cities and different cultures is much higher when we are in Europe, of course. In America we are able to bring bigger audiences. Our goal is to have a loyal and excited audience in both places, and I would not say that one place is better than the other. Being at home is always nice, but when you travel and people receive you well, in countries where they even do not speak your language very well, it’s a very humbling and honoring feeling. 

Marc has always wanted to travel and play in Europe, to be successful there. Being a rock n’ roll band, we know there are always people that want to hear your music and we are just excited and glad, that with the work we have put, have been able to create a nice fan base there.

When we tour, we also sometimes have time to write new music, yes. We like both things, to do some tourism, but we never stop thinking about music.

So, are you maybe now writing some new music? Any hope for a new Studio Album soon?

No expectation of a new record very soon. We are always writing new music, but I think this record cycle is going to take a little bit longer, not because we don’t have any material, but we want to be sure at this moment of time in our career that we take the right decisions.

You have been lucky enough to open for very big acts, like Guns N’ Roses, The Who or The Black Crowes. Is there any band you would love to open for?

No doubt: AC/DC! They are not going to live forever, so we must arrange this quick, haha… It would be a real dream. Foo Fighters would be really cool too…

Anyway, you know, we are very much focused on doing our own headline tours right now. We did a very nice tour with Great Van Fleet, but at this point we are happy to do our shows on our own.

Speaking about Greta van Fleet. Are we, the rock fans, driven mainly by nostalgia? When I see the success, at least in Spain that a band like Dirty Honey has, and the one Greta Van Fleet has achieved, I’m a bit surprised… And don’t get me wrong, I also love Greta Van Fleet…

You might be right and we should copy somebody more directly, haha… just joking. You might be right, yes. I have always thought that the way we do it, with our unique sound, our own songs, is the best way.

The Greta guys, when they came out, they were just some youngsters at High School and they knew what they wanted to do and how to do it. Their challenge has been to find themselves, not just as new Led Zeppelin, but in their own way and I actually think they’ve done it. For us, our challenge is to get the definition of ourselves into a mainstream public, you know. Everyone has their own challenge and hopefully there is room for all of us.

It’s an easier get in, you know, when it’s something familiar, but it’s not a guarantee and I don’t want to take anything from them. Greta van Fleet sounded a lot like Led Zeppelin in the beginning, but there was absolutely nobody that came before them that did this that good. They focused on the Rober Plant and Jimmy Page more acoustic side, when other bands before had focused on the heavier stuff. The public saw how good they were at such a young age.

I really think we will also have our own moment, and we must stick to our guns and we are true to ourselves.

I also think so! I have to say that I love your 2 albums, they are truly fantastic and the new live album captures extremely well how good you are when you play live, the high energy, the emotion…

Hey! You mention our 2 albums, but what about our initial EP? It has “When I’m gone”, “Heartbreaker”, “Rolling 7s”…

Thanks! This was the idea with “Mayhem and Revelry Live”, to really capture in one album, what everybody that has seen us live talks about. And I think we did it, we are happy about it.
