Lords Of Salem: “Creamos algo que se siente como una película de terror y un show de rock”

Hablamos con Marple, bajista de la banda, afable e ilusionado como un adolescente lo estaría a la hora de presentar un trabajo sobresaliente en el instituto.

LuX – Hola amigo! ¿Cómo te encuentras? Supongo que lleno de energía para dar a conocer vuestro primer larga duración Supersonic Vampire Pussy. Un título evocador y provocador ¿no?

Marple – ¡Saludos, amigo! Gracias por esa introducción tan genial. Está claro que me conoces bien: sigo comportándome como un maldito adolescente cuando se trata de esta música, ¡jaja!

Pero, sinceramente, la energía del grupo está por las nubes ahora mismo. Estamos más que emocionados porque el álbum ha salido exactamente como queríamos. En cuanto al título, Supersonic Vampire Pussy captura a la perfección de qué va Lords of Salem. Es una mezcla salvaje de humor negro, terror clásico, ciencia ficción y esas películas de monstruos y Drácula de la vieja escuela con las que crecimos. Cogimos todas esas influencias oscuras y las potenciamos con la música que nos encanta. Es ruidoso, es provocativo y es 100 % nosotros.

¿Cómo, cuando y porqué nació Lords Of Salem? Cuéntanos brevemente vuestra historia.

¡Bueno, es una historia increíble! Postel y yo nos conocemos desde hace mucho tiempo: él tenía unos 10 años y yo 12 cuando nos conocimos. Pero, por alguna extraña razón, no hicimos música juntos hasta mucho más tarde.

La chispa real surgió en el «Metal-Train» de vuelta de Wacken. Acabábamos de pasar tres días y tres noches sumidos en una locura total de rock ’n’ roll haciendo trabajo promocional. Estábamos sentados en ese tren, completamente destrozados pero rebosantes de inspiración, y nos miramos el uno al otro y dijimos: ¿Por qué demonios no hemos montado un grupo todavía?

Justo allí, en medio del caos post festival, nació la visión de Lords Of Salem. Queríamos algo crudo: una mezcla de horror post apocalíptico, ciencia ficción y rock ’n’ roll salvaje como el infierno. Se podría decir que, literalmente, nos sacaron a rastras del abismo embarrado y la gloriosa suciedad de Wacken. No fue solo una fundación; fue una explosión nacida de la tierra.

Es tan notable en vuestras composiciones, como evidentemente en vuestro nombre, unas comparaciones inevitables con Rob Zombie, pero, vuestra música va más allá. Habéis unido una actitud Mötley Crüe llevada hasta sus últimas consecuencias, cómo cierto hálito gótico y sinfónico tenebroso. ¿Qué perspectiva queréis resaltar sobre vuestra personalidad como banda?

¡Has dado en el clavo! Nos encanta Rob Zombie y toda esa estética; es una parte fundamental de nuestro ADN. Pero Lords Of Salem es, en realidad, una mezcla de todas nuestras diferentes obsesiones.

Aunque la música es el motor, la parte visual es igual de importante para nosotros. Soy un fanático acérrimo de Mad Max, así que teníamos muchas ganas de inyectar ese ambiente descarnado y post apocalíptico de «Wasteland» en la identidad de la banda. Para nosotros, se trata de mezclar todo lo que nos gusta: películas de culto, música heavy, suciedad y una buena dosis de diversión oscura.

No destacaría solo un aspecto porque, para nosotros, el sonido y la imagen son inseparables. Se trata del «panorama general»: crear un mundo completo y envolvente que se sienta como una mezcla entre una película de terror y un espectáculo de rock de alto octanaje. ¡Se supone que debe ser una sobrecarga sensorial total!

Define a la banda y vende este disco con tus palabras y sin tapujos. Yo aguardo mis elogios para la crítica del disco.

¡Uf, describir a tu propia banda es complicado porque probablemente nos veo desde una perspectiva totalmente diferente a la de los fans! Para empezar, nos conocemos desde hace años, así que la química es genial. Si tuviera que describirnos, diría que somos el grupo de blandengues más salvajes que jamás hayas conocido, ¡jajaja!

En cuanto al álbum Supersonic Vampire Pussy… tío, fue un parto brutal. Hubo mucho estrés, tanto a nivel interno como a nuestro alrededor. Nos llevó al límite. Pero a pesar de todo ese caos, conseguimos crear un disco precioso y contundente. Al final, creo que realmente se nota lo mucho que nos divertimos haciéndolo. Es crudo, es sincero y, sin duda, es el mejor álbum que hemos hecho nunca. Y PUNTO. (risas)

¿Cómo son los directos de Lords Of Salem? Yo, por ejemplo, soy poco partidista de los pregrabados en bandas de Hard Rock y Metal, sobre todo en los coros, pero no me molestan a la hora de producir un caos controlado con un sentido más allá de la perfección a la que aspiran ciertos artistas en sus trabajos y que en directo no pueden reproducir por falta de talento. Evidentemente vosotros hacéis uso de ellos necesariamente, pero en otra escala.

Mira, es cierto que usamos samples, pero son estrictamente para crear ambiente: cosas como fragmentos de sonido de películas, capas de sintetizador, disparos láser o esas pequeñas melodías cinematográficas que construyen el mundo. Pero en lo que respecta al núcleo —las voces, las guitarras, la batería y el bajo— eso somos nosotros al 100 %. Y te puedo decir una cosa: ¡si tocamos una nota equivocada, la vas a oír! (risas).

Tocamos EN DIRECTO, y punto. He visto un montón de bandas en las que incluso los instrumentos principales salen de un disco duro y, sinceramente, te hace preguntarte por qué se molestan siquiera en subirse al escenario. Pero nosotros somos una banda de rock ’n’ roll. Se supone que debe ser crudo, y no pasa nada si no es «perfecto» en cada segundo. Citando a Paul Stanley de Kiss: «¿Quieres un concierto de rock ’n’ roll en directo o quieres música de cámara?». Estamos aquí por el espectáculo, la energía y la autenticidad.

El viejo gran continente está amenazado por los vientos de cambio, ¿cómo crees que afectará esta situación a la música, especialmente a la europea? ¿Estamos viviendo una burbuja de festivales que acabará explotando?

¡Esa es una gran pregunta! Mira, las cosas cambian constantemente; este mundo está en constante evolución. Pero hay una cosa de la que estoy seguro: mientras haya seres humanos en la Tierra, habrá música, arte y libros. El arte es eterno.

Que siga siendo comercial o cómo evolucione la industria, eso es otra historia. Pero la historia nos muestra que, cuando algo muere, nace algo nuevo y fresco en su lugar. Las tendencias y las «burbujas» pueden ir y venir, pero ¿el alma de la música europea y la necesidad de esa conexión creativa? Eso no va a desaparecer. Simplemente seguiremos adaptándonos y creando, sin importar en qué dirección sople el viento.

¿Qué influencias mantenéis en común como banda y cuáles son más personales? ¿Cuál dirías que es el disco que marcó tu camino a la música?

En realidad solo puedo hablar por mí mismo, pero para mí siempre ha sido Kiss. Soy un fan incondicional desde que tenía 10 años. De hecho, fue justo por esa época cuando conocí a Postel. En el colegio, éramos un grupo de cuatro chicos que, básicamente, éramos Kiss, ¡o al menos lo intentábamos con todas nuestras fuerzas, ja, ja!

Para mí, todo lo de Kiss es el referente absoluto. Nada supera a los Dioses. Pero como banda, sin duda compartimos una obsesión profundamente arraigada por los maestros: Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Ozzy y Led Zeppelin.

Si me preguntas por los álbumes que realmente allanaron el camino y moldearon nuestro ADN, diría que es una mezcla de lo clásico y lo descarnado: obviamente Destroyer de Kiss por su puro espectáculo, Hellbilly Deluxe de Rob Zombie por ese groove industrial de terror, y Welcome to My Nightmare de Alice Cooper por el lado teatral del rock “n” roll. También nos inspiramos mucho en grupos modernos como Rammstein o Wednesday 13. Es esa mezcla de shock-rock clásico y energía oscura moderna lo que define el sonido de Lords Of Salem.

¿En qué lugares del mundo te alucinaría tocar? Cuáles son tus músicos de referencia? ¿Y un guilty pleasure musical?

¿Dónde me encantaría tocar? Si vamos a soñar a lo grande, vamos a por todas: ¡en Marte! Como en «Starship Troopers» o en algo sacado de «La guía del autoestopista galáctico», ¡jaja!

Pero volviendo a la Tierra, España ocupa uno de los primeros puestos de mi lista. Solo he oído cosas increíbles sobre el público de allí y los festivales alucinantes. Por supuesto, como banda de rock, Estados Unidos es casi un rito de iniciación obligatorio, e Inglaterra es una parada obligada solo por su historia. Ah, y Japón sería una locura… Vale, me estoy dando cuenta de que, básicamente, ¡quiero tocar en todas partes!

En cuanto a mis referentes: como he mencionado, soy un gran seguidor de Kiss, especialmente del tipo de la lengua legendaria. En cuanto a mis pasiones musicales y «placeres culpables», me encantaría saber tocar la batería o el piano. Hay algo tan genial en entrar en una habitación, ver un piano y tocar algo suave de forma desenfadada que deja a todo el mundo con ganas de más… pero, por desgracia, ¡no sé tocar ni una sola nota!

Y ya que me has preguntado por un placer culpable: no me avergüenza decir que, de hecho, me gusta escuchar a Robbie Williams. Tiene ese alma de artista, ¡y eso hay que respetarlo!

Lords Of Salem are no accident. Their music is carefully crafted and focused on overwhelming you with its power, making your legs tremble in the face of their menacing arsenal, and also on seducing your bizarre inner self with its dark sensuality. From Germany comes a projectile intent on levelling everything within miles. We spoke to Marple, the band’s bassist, who is as affable and excited as a teenager would be when presenting an outstanding piece of work at school.

LuX- Hello mate! How are you? I suppose you’re full of energy to promote your first full-length album, Supersonic Vampire Pussy. An evocative and provocative title, isn’t it?

Marple – Cheers, my friend! Thanks for the killer intro. You clearly know me well—I’m still acting like a damn teenager when it comes to this music, haha!

But honestly, the energy in the band is through the roof right now. We are beyond stoked because the album turned out exactly how we wanted it. Regarding the title, Supersonic Vampire Pussy perfectly captures what Lords of Salem is all about. It’s a wild mix of black humor, classic horror, sci-fi, and those old-school monster and Dracula flicks we grew up on. We took all those dark influences and cranked them up with the music we love. It’s loud, it’s provocative, and it’s 100% us.

How, when and why was Lords Of Salem formed? Tell us briefly about your history.

Well, it’s a hell of a story! Postel and I actually go way back—he was about 10 and I was 12 when we first met. But for some crazy reason, we never made music together until much later.

The real spark happened on the ‘Metal-Train’ coming back from Wacken. We had just spent three days and nights lost in total rock ’n’ roll madness doing some promo work. We were sitting on that train, completely wrecked but buzzing with inspiration, and we just looked at each other and said: ‘Why the hell haven’t we started a band yet?

Right there, amidst the post-festival chaos, the vision for Lords Of Salem was born. We wanted something raw—a mix of Wasteland-Horror, Sci-Fi, and wild-as-hell Rock ’n’ Roll. You could say we were literally dragged out of the muddy abyss and the glorious filth of Wacken. It wasn’t just a founding; it was an explosion born from the dirt.

It’s so striking in your compositions, as is evident in your name, that comparisons with Rob Zombie are inevitable, but your music goes further. You’ve combined a Mötley Crüe attitude taken to its extreme with a certain dark, gothic and symphonic edge. What aspect of your identity as a band do you want to highlight?  

You hit the nail on the head! We definitely love Rob Zombie and that entire aesthetic—it’s a huge part of our DNA. But Lords Of Salem is really a melting pot of all our different obsessions.

While the music is the engine, the visual side is just as vital to us. I’m a massive Mad Max fanatic, so we really wanted to inject that gritty, post-apocalyptic ‘Wasteland’ vibe into the band’s identity. For us, it’s about blending everything we love: cult movies, heavy music, dirt, and a healthy dose of dark fun.

I wouldn’t highlight just one aspect because, to us, the sound and the look are inseparable. It’s all about the ‘big picture’—creating a complete, immersive world that feels like a cross between a horror flick and a high-octane rock show. It’s supposed to be a total sensory overload!

Define the band and sell this album in your own words, without holding back. I’ll save my praise for the album review.

Phew, describing your own band is tough because I probably see us through a completely different lens than the fans do! First of all, we’ve known each other for years, so the chemistry is great. If I had to describe us, I’d say we are the wildest bunch of softies you’ll ever meet, hahaha!

As for the album Supersonic Vampire Pussy… man, it was a brutal birth. There was a lot of stress, both internally and all around us. It pushed us to the edge. But through all that chaos, we managed to create a beautiful, heavy beast of a record. In the end, I think you can really feel how much fun we actually had making it. It’s raw, it’s honest, and without a doubt, it’s the best album we have ever made. PERIOD.

What are Lords Of Salem’s live shows like? Personally, I’m not a big fan of backing tracks in hard rock and metal bands, especially for backing vocals, but I don’t mind them when it comes to creating a controlled chaos with a meaning that goes beyond the perfection certain artists strive for in their recordings—and which they can’t reproduce live due to a lack of talent. Obviously, you make use of them out of necessity, but on a different scale.

Look, we definitely use samples, but they’re strictly for atmosphere—stuff like movie sound bites, synth layers, laser blasts, or those little cinematic melodies that build the world. But when it comes to the core—the vocals, the guitars, the drums, and the bass—that is 100% us. And I can tell you one thing: if we hit a wrong note, you’re gonna hear it! (laughs).

We play LIVE, period. I’ve seen plenty of bands where even the main instruments come off a hard drive, and honestly, it makes you wonder why you’re even bothering to stand on stage. But we’re a rock ’n’ roll band. It’s supposed to be raw, and it’s perfectly fine if it’s not ‘perfect’ every single second. To quote Paul Stanley from Kiss: ‘Do you want a rock ’n’ roll live show, or do you want chamber music?’ We’re here for the show, the energy, and the real deal.

The old continent is threatened by the winds of change; how do you think this situation will affect music, especially European music? Are we living in a festival bubble that will eventually burst?

That’s a big question! Look, things are always changing; there’s a constant state of flux in this world. But there’s one thing I’m certain of: as long as there are humans walking this earth, there will be music, art, and books. Art is eternal.

Whether it stays commercial or how the industry evolves—that’s a different story. But history shows us that when something dies, something new and fresh is born in its place. Trends and ‘bubbles’ might come and go, but the soul of European music and the need for that creative connection? That’s not going anywhere. We’ll just keep adapting and creating, no matter which way the wind blows.

What influences do you share as a band, and which are more personal? Which album would you say paved your path to music?

I can really only speak for myself here, but for me, it’s always been about Kiss. I’ve been a die-hard fan since I was 10 years old. That was actually right around the time I met Postel. Back in school, we were this group of four guys who basically were Kiss or at least we tried our best to be, haha!

To me, everything by Kiss is the gold standard. Nothing beats the Gods. But as a band, we definitely share a deep-rooted obsession with the masters: Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Ozzy, and Led Zeppelin.

If you’re asking about the albums that really paved the way and shaped our DNA, I’d have to say it’s a mix of classic and gritty: obviously Kiss’ ‘Destroyer’ for the pure showmanship, Rob Zombie’s ‘Hellbilly Deluxe’ for that industrial horror-groove, and Alice Cooper’s ‘Welcome to My Nightmare’ for the theatrical side of rock ‘n’ roll. We also draw a lot of fire from modern acts like Rammstein or Wednesday 13. It’s that blend of classic shock-rock and modern dark energy that defines the LORDS OF SALEM sound.

Where in the world would you love to play? Who are your musical role models? And a musical guilty pleasure?

Where would I love to play? If we’re dreaming big, let’s go all the way: Mars! Just like the ‘Starship Troopers‘ or something out of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, haha!

But back on Earth, Spain is high on my list. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about the crowds there and the killer festivals. Of course, as a rock band, the USA is almost a mandatory rite of passage, and England is a must-play for the history alone. Oh, and Japan would be insane… okay, I’m realizing I basically just want to play everywhere!

As for my role models: Like I mentioned, I’m a massive Kiss disciple, especially the guy with the legendary tongue. Regarding my musical passions and ‘guilty pleasures’—I really wish I could play the drums or the piano. There’s something so cool about walking into a room, seeing a piano, and just casually playing something smooth that leaves everyone wanting more… but sadly, I can’t play a single note on it!

And since you asked for a guilty pleasure: I’m not ashamed to say I actually enjoy listening to Robbie Williams. He’s got that entertainer soul, and you’ve gotta respect that!
