La banda está lista para regresar a España tras más de una década de ausencia, y lo hará a lo grande, encabezando la primera edición del Kingdom of Rock. Este festival tendrá lugar el próximo 8 de marzo de 2025 en el impresionante Navarra Arena, en Pamplona.
Hablamos con DeMaio sobre el regreso de MANOWAR a nuestro país y otros temas interesantes que nos reveló en esta charla.

Después de varios años sin actuar en España, vuestros seguidores españoles están realmente emocionados por vuestro regreso como cabezas de cartel del próximo evento Kingdom of Rock. ¿Qué significa para ti reunirte con tu ‘Army of Immortals‘ en Pamplona después de más de una década de espera, y cómo percibes el impacto de este reencuentro para los seguidores más leales de MANOWAR en el país?
Reunirnos con nuestros Manowarriors españoles es un honor y un privilegio. España siempre ha sido uno de los territorios más apasionados y leales para MANOWAR. Este reencuentro va más allá de un simple concierto; representa una auténtica celebración del metal, la unidad y el vínculo indestructible que mantenemos con nuestros seguidores.
A lo largo de los años, he tenido el privilegio de ver a MANOWAR en varias ciudades de España y en diferentes etapas de su trayectoria musical. Pamplona, en particular, es conocida por su rica tradición y su buen ambiente. ¿Has visitado alguna vez Pamplona? ¿En qué medida influyen Pamplona y otras ciudades de la gira en el diseño y la creación de vuestros espectáculos?
Pamplona está llena de historia y tradiciones ricas que aún no he tenido la oportunidad de explorar. Cuando estamos de gira, estoy completamente enfocado en preparar el mejor espectáculo posible, y cuando no estamos de gira, estoy en el estudio. Pero, incluso con el tiempo limitado que tenemos, nos inspiramos en nuestros fans, su cultura y la atmósfera única de cada país.
El setlist de la gira «Blood Of Our Enemies» incluirá clásicos de 1984 como Hail to England y Sign of the Hammer, grandes álbumes que han influido en muchos de nosotros. Han pasado 40 años desde esas canciones clásicas, y vamos a revivirlas en vivo. ¿Estás emocionado por revivir estos clásicos en vivo? ¿Qué significado especial tienen estas canciones para la banda, considerando que han perdurado más de 40 años?
Absolutamente. Estas canciones son los himnos de batalla que definieron quiénes somos. Ocupan un lugar especial en nuestra historia y en nuestros corazones, y tocarlas en el escenario es un tributo a la lealtad de nuestros fans que las han mantenido vivas durante más de cuatro décadas.
La gira «Blood of Our Enemies» ha agotado las entradas para numerosos shows. ¿Cómo afecta al grupo el entusiasmo global por los espectáculos con entradas agotadas? ¿Qué significa este nivel de demanda para vosotros?
Es un gran honor que no damos por sentado. Es un testimonio del poder del verdadero metal y la dedicación de nuestros fans. Cada espectáculo con entradas agotadas nos motiva y refuerza nuestra determinación de seguir entregando el 100% en todo lo que hacemos.
¿Hay alguna canción en particular que, debido a su importancia histórica para los fans, que no pueda faltar en el setlist de esta gira?
Pregunta a 1000 fans y obtendrás 1000 respuestas. Para nosotros, cada canción es igualmente importante, ya que todas nos representan. Pero no te preocupes: ¡habrá muchos clásicos favoritos en este setlist!
MANOWAR siempre ha tenido una conexión especial con sus seguidores. Han sido una inspiración para generaciones de músicos. ¿Cómo te sientes al saber que tu música motiva a otros a tomar un instrumento y unirse a la batalla por el ‘true metal’? ¿Qué significa para ti ver a bandas tributo y músicos emergentes interpretar su música como homenaje al legado de la banda?
Es una lección de humildad y un gran cumplido. Ver a otros inspirados por nuestra música es prueba de que nuestro mensaje se entiende y sigue vivo.
En esta gira, estarán tocando en lugares icónicos como el O2 Academy Brixton. ¿Hubo algún momento específico en su carrera en el que MANOWAR consideró que tocar en escenarios como este era un sueño logrado? ¿Qué representan para vosotros lugares como el O2 Academy Brixton ahora?
Para ser sincero, para nosotros son los fans los que hacen especial una actuación, no el lugar. Elegimos escenarios que nos permiten ofrecer el espectáculo que imaginamos, con todos los factores que hacen de un evento algo grandioso. Por supuesto, regresar a Inglaterra, con toda su historia para nosotros, siempre es genial.
MANOWAR siempre ha sido sinónimo de poder y gloria sobre el escenario. ¿Cómo se prepara la banda para mantener su fuerza en cada espectáculo?
Con disciplina, trabajo duro y el deseo de dar lo mejor de nosotros para nuestros fans, cada noche.
Leí una cita tuya en una entrevista hace años que decía: «La verdad es que nunca seremos como Bon Jovi, por ejemplo, aunque sea un estilo diferente, pero ellos necesitan 1,000 fans para igualar solo a uno de MANOWAR. Además, prefiero tener un verdadero fan que un millón de falsos». He usado esta cita muchas veces para defender lo que MANOWAR significa para mí: una banda auténtica. ¿Qué diferencia a un ‘verdadero fan’ de MANOWAR de los seguidores de otras bandas, y cómo influye esa conexión en vuestra música y filosofía?
Los verdaderos fans de MANOWAR viven y respiran metal; entienden los valores que son inherentes a todo lo que hacemos. Estos fans son leales, apasionados e implacables. Valoran que nos mantengamos fieles a nuestro mensaje y nunca comprometamos nuestros principios, y eso crea este increíble vínculo que tenemos con ellos.
A lo largo de los años, Joey, has sido un mentor y guía para muchas personas. En tu pódcast Words of Power, hablas de la importancia de la integridad, la amistad, la lealtad y el compromiso. Has entrevistado a artistas increíbles, entre ellos tu amigo de la infancia Eric Adams. ¿Cómo han influido estos valores en tu relación con Eric y en la longevidad de MANOWAR?

Sin embargo, creo que son un ejemplo de cómo defender el honor de la banda. MANOWAR siempre ha luchado por el respeto y la justicia en la industria musical. ¿Cómo enfrentáis las críticas por no aceptar contratos injustos y qué mensaje darías a las bandas emergentes sobre defender su producción y honor?
No se puede tener principios “a veces”. Los tienes o no los tienes. Si sabes que tienes razón, te levantas y luchas. Así somos nosotros. La gente a menudo no conoce el trasfondo de una situación, por lo que es fácil juzgar mal las acciones de alguien. Así es la vida. Mi consejo es simple: nunca comprometas tu integridad. Cualquiera que sea el resultado, puedes estar orgulloso de ti mismo y ganarás fuerza con ello.
Para terminar, ¿Cuándo saldrá el nuevo álbum de Manowar? ¿Podrías compartir algunos detalles sobre él?
Hemos estado trabajando en ello entre giras y está avanzando muy bien. Como somos perfeccionistas, hemos desechado grabaciones y empezado de nuevo en nuestra búsqueda del sonido perfecto. Ahora mismo estamos enfocados en la gira, pero estén atentos: ¡valdrá la pena la espera!

In the world of metal, few names resonate with the power of Joey DeMaio, leader of MANOWAR and a staunch advocate of «true metal.» MANOWAR has always been a symbol of values such as loyalty, integrity, and passion, creating an almost tribal bond with their followers.
The band is set to return to Spain after more than a decade of absence, and they are doing so in grand fashion, headlining the first edition of the Kingdom of Rock festival. This event will take place on March 8, 2025, at the impressive Navarra Arena in Pamplona.
We spoke with DeMaio about MANOWAR’s return and other interesting topics he shared with us in this conversation.
After several years without performing in Spain, Spanish fans are truly excited about their return as the headliners of the upcoming Kingdom of Rock, What does it mean for you to reunite with your ‘Army of Immortals’ in Pamplona after more than a decade of waiting, and how do you perceive the impact of this reunion for the most loyal MANOWAR followers in the country?
Reuniting with our Spanish Manowarriors is an honor and a privilege. Spain has always been one of the most passionate and loyal territories for MANOWAR. This reunion is not just a concert—it’s a celebration of metal, unity, and the unbreakable bond we share with our fans.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of seeing MANOWAR in various cities across Spain and at different stages of your musical journey. Pamplona, in particular, is renowned for its rich tradition and passionate atmosphere. Have you ever visited Pamplona? To what extent do Pamplona and other cities on the tour influence the design and creation of your shows?
Pamplona is full of history and rich traditions that I haven’t had the chance to explore yet. When we tour, I am fully focused on getting everything ready for the ultimate show, and when we don’t tour, I’m in the studio. But even with the limited time we have on tour, we draw inspiration from our fans, their culture, and the unique atmosphere in each country.
The setlist for «The Blood Of Our Enemies» tour will include classics from 1984 like Hail to England and Sign of the Hammer, great albums that have influenced many of us. It’s been 40 years since those classic tracks, and we’re going to bring them back to life live. Are you excited about revisiting classics like Hail to England and Sign of the Hammer live? What special meaning do these songs hold for the band, considering they have endured for over 40 years?
Absolutely. These songs are the battle hymns that defined who we are. They hold a special place in our history and our hearts and playing them on stage is a tribute to the loyalty of our fans who’ve kept them alive for over four decades.
«The Blood of Our Enemies» tour has sold out tickets for numerous shows. How does the global enthusiasm of sold-out shows impact the band? What does this level of demand mean to you?
It’s a great honor that we don’t take for granted. It’s a testament to the power of true metal and the dedication of our fans. Every sold-out show fuels us and strengthens our resolve to keep delivering 100% in all we do.
Is there a particular song that cannot be missing from the setlist for this tour?
Ask 1000 fans and you’ll get 1000 answers. To us, every song is equally important as each of them represents us. But no worries – there’ll be plenty all-time favorites in this set list!
MANOWAR has always had a special connection with its fans. They have been an inspiration for generations of musicians. How do you feel knowing that your music motivates others to pick up an instrument and join the battle for ‘true metal’? What does it mean to you to see tribute bands and emerging musicians perform your music as a tribute to the band’s legacy?
It’s humbling and a great compliment. Seeing others inspired by our music is proof that our message is understood and lives on.
On this tour, you will be playing at iconic venues like the O2 Academy Brixton. Is there a specific moment in your career when MANOWAR considered that playing at such stages was a dreamed achievement? What do iconic venues like the O2 Academy Brixton represent for you now?
Truth be told – for us it’s the fans that make a performance special, not the venue. We select venues that allow us to play the shows we envision, with all the many factors that make for a great event. Of course, going back to England, with all its history for us, is always great.
MANOWAR has always been synonymous with power and glory on stage. How does the band prepare to maintain its strength in every show?
With discipline, hard work, and the desire to deliver the very best for our fans, every single night.
I read a quote from you in an interview years ago that said: «The fact is, we’ll never be like Bon Jovi, for example, even though it’s a different style, but they need 1,000 fans to equal just one of MANOWAR. Besides, I prefer to have one true fan than a million fake ones.» I have used this quote many times to defend what MANOWAR means to me: an authentic band. What differentiates a ‘true fan’ of MANOWAR from the followers of other bands, and how does that connection influence your music and philosophy
True MANOWAR fans live and breathe metal, they understand the values that are inherent in everything we do. These fans are loyal, passionate, and unrelenting. They appreciate that we stay true to our message and never compromise, and that creates this incredible bond we have with them.
Over the years, Joey, you have been a mentor and guide for many people. In your podcast Words of Power, you talk about the importance of integrity, friendship, loyalty, and commitment. You’ve interviewed incredible artists, and among them is your childhood friend Eric Adams. How have these values influenced your relationship with Eric and the longevity of MANOWAR?
These values are the foundation of everything we do. Eric and I have built our partnership on trust and mutual respect, which has been key to keeping MANOWAR strong for all these years.
MANOWAR has always been a fighting band, not just on stage, but also defending the right for bands to have their production handled properly, ensuring contracts are perfectly fulfilled. Lately, we’ve seen a lot of disrespect toward bands in this regard. As a fan of yours, I’ve seen criticism for not accepting certain contracts, which is sometimes interpreted as selfishness by followers who want to see you in their cities. However, I believe you are an example of how to defend the band’s honor. MANOWAR has always fought for respect and justice in the music industry. How do you handle criticism for not accepting unfair contracts, and what message would you give to emerging bands about defending their production and honor?
You can’t have principles “some of the time”. You have them, or you don’t! If you know you’re right, you stand up and fight. That’s us, anyways. People often don’t know the backstory of a situation, so it is easy to misjudge someone’s actions. That’s life. My advice is simple: Never compromise your integrity. Whatever the outcome, you can be proud of yourself, and you’ll gain strength from it.
To finish, When is the new MANOWAR album coming out? Could you share any details about it?
We’ve been working on it between tours and it’s coming along great. Since we’re perfectionists, we’ve scrapped recordings and started over in our quest for the ultimate sound. Right now, we’re focusing on the tour, but stay tuned – it will be worth the wait!
