Jade (Frozen Crown) “Tomamos a Children Of Bodom como modelos a seguir”

Hola ¿cómo estás Jade? Antes de comenzar a hablar sobre «War Hearts«, ¿podrías contarles a aquellos que quizás aún no os conozcan cuándo y cómo se formó Frozen Crown?

Jade: Frozen Crown se formó en Japón en 2017 como un proyecto en solitario de Federico, y yo solo estaba destinada a ser cantante invitada en algunas de las canciones. Finalmente, terminé cantando en casi todo el álbum y juntos grabamos nuestro debut, “The Fallen King”. Experimentamos un poco con algunas canciones más sinfónicas, junto con otras más directas de metal clásico, así como algunas de death metal melódico. Los siguientes álbumes fueron acercándose cada vez más a nuestro sonido directo de Power Metal con riffs de Death Metal sueco.

El título de este nuevo álbum tiene un significado especial vinculado a la influencia de Children of Bodom. ¿Podrías hablarme sobre esta conexión y su importancia en el contexto del álbum?

Children Of Bodom sacó su debut “Something Wild” cuando literalmente éramos niños, así que nos impresionó su actitud feroz, salvaje, cruda y juvenil, y fue natural para nosotros identificarnos con ellos y tomarlos como ídolos y modelos a seguir.

Siempre les hemos rendido homenaje con algunas partes líricas o musicales específicas en el pasado, pero esta vez, para este nuevo comienzo de la banda, con la energía adicional que trajo nuestra nueva (y más joven) integrante Alessia, sentimos que era el título perfecto para este álbum.

Creo que mi tema favorito de “War Hearts” tras escucharlo es «On Silver Wings», la canción es fantástica. Durante la composición de un nuevo tema, ¿qué aspecto te resulta más desafiante?: crear una melodía atractiva, un estribillo pegadizo, la atmósfera adecuada…

También es una de mis favoritas (¡y además es la canción en la que más contribuí a la escritura de la línea vocal, así que gracias)! Diría que es una mezcla de crear una melodía atractiva para un coro. Los coros son siempre lo primero que comenzamos a componer cuando escribimos una nueva canción, así que siempre son la parte más difícil, porque tienes que empezar desde cero. Una vez que tienes el coro, el resto de la canción es súper fácil de desarrollar.

Sobre los avances publicados del álbum. El single «War Hearts» encarna el auténtico power metal, y también habéis lanzado «Steel and Gold», que desprende un poder increíble. ¿Cómo describirías el estilo musical de Frozen Crown?

Tenemos influencias muy fuertes del death metal melódico sueco. Tanto Federico como yo (los principales compositores) somos grandes fanáticos de Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Soilwork, entre otros. Gran parte de los riffs están influenciados por estas bandas, pero en cuanto a las voces, nos inspiran bandas de power metal como los primeros trabajos de Sonata Arctica o Angra. La mezcla de todo esto da lugar a nuestro sonido, que creo que no está muy lejos de los primeros trabajos de Hammerfall (una banda con fuertes lazos con la escena del death metal melódico por razones obvias).

Tus letras están llenas de metáforas sobre la vida cotidiana. ¿Hay alguna experiencia personal específica que te haya inspirado para una canción en particular?

Por supuesto, la reciente pérdida de mi padre me enseñó que nunca puedes dar por sentado el tiempo que tienes para pasar con una persona que amas. Siempre deberías intentar hacer lo mejor con el tiempo que tienes disponible. “Edge Of Reality” definitivamente habla sobre esto. En general, la mayoría de nuestras canciones están ligadas a este concepto, no solo relacionado con las personas que amas, sino también contigo mismo. Hacer lo mejor para mejorar es una forma de honrar lo que la vida te ofrece cada día.

Las canciones además presentan arreglos complejos por lo que será difícil mantener la fidelidad de esas grabaciones en vivo ¿Esa es la razón por la que tenéis tres guitarras?

De hecho, tener tres guitarristas ayuda a mantener esa fidelidad a las grabaciones, ¡y esa es la misma razón por la que incluimos a Alessia en la banda!

Federico es el diseñador gráfico de la banda, ¿estoy en lo cierto?

Bueno, él ha pintado todas las portadas de nuestros álbumes, y es el director detrás de nuestros videos, así que su visión es definitivamente el 100% de nuestro aspecto visual.

Con este lanzamiento, tendréis cinco álbumes en la historia de la banda. Si pudieras describir cada uno de tus álbumes con un elemento natural, ¿cuáles serían y por qué?

¡Gracias por la pregunta tan interesante! Diría que el primer álbum “The Fallen King” sería Tierra, por el enfoque crudo y casi inconsciente que tuvimos cuando lo creamos, y porque empezamos desde las profundidades. El segundo álbum “Crowned In Frost” sería definitivamente Hielo, ya que en él comenzamos a trazar nuestro propio camino y definir nuestro propio sonido y personalidad. El tercer álbum “Winterbane” sería Agua. Este elemento se menciona a menudo y recorre todas las letras, y también el color verde utilizado en la portada del álbum era una referencia al lago donde filmamos nuestro primer sencillo “Far Beyond”. El cuarto, “Call Of The North”, es Aire, ya que representa esta ascensión hacia una forma final, y está evocado por la alta montaña helada y neblinosa en la portada del álbum. Esto deja al quinto, “War Hearts”, con Fuego, y ningún elemento sería más apropiado aquí para representar este nuevo comienzo y este renacer en llamas. También es un elemento explícito en la portada del álbum, por cierto.

¿Cuál ha sido el momento más surrealista que habéis vivido durante una gira?

Diría que pasar tiempo con la mayoría de nuestros héroes personales: compartir camerinos con muchos de nuestros músicos y cantantes favoritos, compartir el autobús de gira con Dragonforce, pasar tiempo con estas personas hablando de cosas increíblemente normales y ordinarias. Es una locura.

¿Qué planes tenéis para promocionar «War Hearts»? He visto las fechas de la gira, pero, ¿habrá más lanzamientos de videos u otros eventos especiales? ¿Nos podéis adelantar algo?

Tal vez sí, pero por supuesto no podemos anticipar nada. Claro que nuestros fans ya saben que SIEMPRE estamos listos para un nuevo video (nos encanta filmar videos y son muy complementarios a nuestra música), ¡así que pueden esperar muchos más en camino! Estamos trabajando en algunas cosas lindas para 2025… ¡mantente atento a nuestras redes sociales!

Si tuvieras la oportunidad de componer la banda sonora de una película, ¿qué tipo de historia te gustaría contar a través de tu música?

Un grupo de amigos deja su tierra natal para una búsqueda épica que los llevará a salvar el mundo y también los cambiará a todos para siempre… oh espera, ¡esto es literalmente “La Comunidad del Anillo” (risas). Creo que sería la historia de una experiencia que cambie la vida, no necesariamente épica y llena de batallas, monstruos y espadas, sino más bien el viaje de un personaje para convertirse en la mejor versión de sí mismo.

Gracias por concedernos esta entrevista, Jane. Ha sido un placer conversar contigo. ¿Hay algo que te gustaría decir a nuestros lectores y a vuestros seguidores antes de terminar?

Sí, estoy extremadamente feliz y honrada de estar aquí en esta revista, y realmente espero que los lectores disfruten de nuestro nuevo álbum “War Hearts” tanto como nosotros disfrutamos creándolo. ¡También estoy deseando volver a España, definitivamente la tierra más calurosa para tocar un concierto con el público más apasionado de todos! ¡Nos vemos en la carretera!

Hi, how are you, Jade? Before we start discussing «War Hearts«, could you tell those who might not know you yet when and how Frozen Crown was formed?

Frozen Crown was formed in Japan in 2017 as a solo project of Federico, and I was just meant to be a guest singer on some of the tracks. Eventually I ended up singing on almost the entirety of the album and together we recorded our debut, “The Fallen King”. We experimented a little with some more symphonic tracks together with some more straight old school metal tracks, as well as some melodic death metal ones. The next albums went more and more into our straight “Power Metal meets Swedish Death Metal riffs” sound.

The title of this new album has a special meaning linked to the influence of Children of Bodom. Could you elaborate on this connection and its significance in the context of the album?

Children Of Bodom came out with their debut “Something Wild” while we were literally kids, so we were just blown away by their ferocious, wild and raw, youthful attitude, and it was natural for us to identify with them and take them as our idols and role models. We always paid tribute to them with some specific lyrical or musical parts in the past, but this time, for this new beginning of the band, with the additional energy brought by our newest (and youngest) member Alessia, we felt like it could be the perfect title for this album.

I think my favorite track from «War Hearts» after listening to it is «On Silver Wings»; the song is fantastic. When composing a new song, what aspect do you find most challenging: creating an engaging melody, a catchy chorus, the right atmosphere…?

It’s also one of my favorites (as well as the song where I contributed the most to the vocal line writing, so thank you)! I’d say a mixture of both “coming up with an engaging melody for a chorus”. Choruses are always the first thing we start from when writing a new song, so they are always the hardest part, cause you have to start from scratch. After you have got the chorus, the rest of the song is super easy to come up with.

Regarding the album’s released previews, the single «War Hearts» embodies authentic power metal, and you’ve also released «Steel and Gold,» which exudes incredible power. How would you describe the musical style of Frozen Crown?

We have got some strong influences coming from Swedish melodic death metal. Both Federico and me (the main composers) are big fans of Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Soilwork and so on. Most of the riffing is influenced by these bands, but vocally wise we are inspired by power metal bands like early Sonata Arctica or Angra. The mixture of this brings to our sound, which I think it’s not really far from some of the earliest Hammerfal works (a band with strong ties with the melodic death metal scene for obvious reasons).

Your lyrics are filled with metaphors about everyday life. Is there a specific personal experience that inspired you for a particular song?

Of course the recent passing of my father taught me that you can never take the time you have to spend with a person you love for granted. You should always try to do the best you can with the time you have at disposal. “Edge Of Reality” definitely talks about this. In general, most of our songs are tied to this concept, not only related to the people you love, but also to yourself. Doing the best to improve yourself is a way to honor what life kindly offers to you every day.

The songs also feature complex arrangements, making it difficult to maintain fidelity to those recordings in a live setting. Is that why you have three guitarists?

Actually, having three guitar players helps to maintain that fidelity to recordings, and that’s the reason itself why we have included Alessia in the line-up!

Federico is the graphic designer for the band, am I right?

Well, he has painted all our album cover arts himself, and he’s the director behind our videos, so his vision is definitely 100% of our visual aspect.

With this upcoming release, you will have five albums in the band’s history. If you could describe each of your albums with a natural element, what would they be and why?

Thanks for the super interesting question! I would say the first album “The Fallen King” was Earth, because of the raw and almost unconscious approach we had when we created it, and because we started from the depths. The second album “Crowned In Frost” was definitely Ice, as on that we started tracing our own path and defining our own sound and personality. The third album “Winterbane” was Water. This element is mentioned often and it runs throughout all the lyrics, and also the green color used on the album cover was a reference to the lake where we filmed our first single “Far Beyond”. The fourth, “Call Of The North”, is Air, as it represents this ascension towards a final form of sort, and it’s recalled by the high, foggy ice mountain on the album cover. This leaves the fifth, “War Hearts”, with Fire, and no element would be more fitting here, to represent this new beginning and this rebirth in flames. It’s also an explicit element on the album cover, by the way.

What has been the most surreal moment you have experienced during a tour?

I would say spending our time with most of our personal heroes: sharing backstages with many many of our favorite musicians and singers, sharing the tour bus with Dragonforce, spending time with these people talking about incredibly normal and ordinary things. That’s just crazy.

What are your plans to promote War Hearts? I’ve seen the tour dates, but will there be more video releases or other special events? Can you give us a hint?

Maybe yes, but of course we cannot anticipate nothing. Of course, our fans already know that we are ALWAYS up for a new video (we love filming videos and they are very complementary to our music) so they can expect many others coming! We are working on some lovely things for 2025… keep an eye on our social networks!

If you had the chance to compose the soundtrack for a movie, what kind of story would you like to tell through your music?

A bunch of friends leave their homeland for an epic quest that will make them save the world and will also leave them all changed forever… oh wait, this is literally The Fellowship Of The Ring (smiles). I think it would be the story of a life changing experience, not necessarily epic and filled with battles, monsters and swords, but mostly the journey of a character to become the best version of him/herself
